Being a single mom is a tough job, and resolving oneself to enroll in college is a huge, and costly, commitment. With finances being one of the biggest obstacles to being a non-traditional student with offspring, it’s good to know that there are companies and organizations that are willing to lend a helping hand. There are scholarships specifically for single moms that’ll help cover a portion of the costs of your education reducing the amount of student loans you have to take out. It’s pretty much widely known that increasing your education level will undoubtedly raise your standard of living. On another note, don’t think you just have to buckle down and get through schooling while paying bills all alone. There may be more assistance available in your state by dialing 211 (a health and human services number equivalent to 911). Dialing 211 will get you in touch with food banks, child care services, medical help and even career advice if you feel you need a hand. Anyway, here are those scholarships.

Linda’s Scholarship

Linda Lael Miller scholarships are awarded to women who are 25 years old and older who have experienced barriers to fulfilling their education. The applicant must also be a U.S. or Canadian resident who is attending, or is enrolled to attend, a U.S. or Canadian college or university. The total amount of this scholarship is $1,000. The originator of this scholarship, Linda Miller, was herself a single mother before she hit it big as an author.

$5,000 Continuing Education Scholarship

The Cash Store offers five scholarships worth $1,000 each for those who are continuing their college education. Applications are accepted between April 2014 – May 2014. All applicants must have the following: Reside in the U.S., Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands. Be a high school graduate at the time of application. Be 25 years of age or older at the time of application. Be enrolled in full-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited two year or four year college, university, or vocational/technical school for the entire 2014-2015 academic year at the time of application. Have a minimum grade point average of at least a 2.75 at the time of application.

Single Mother Scholarship

The Law Office of Curiel and Runion require a 500 word essay about the advantages of going back to school after becoming a mom. They pick the final five applicants, and then go to a vote to narrow it down to the two best and award 2 $1,000 scholarships to the finalists. Whoever among the final two receive the most social media like’s, tweets, shares and +1’s will win the scholarship.
