Green Scholarships

If you are a deserving student interested in helping the environment or studying ecology or anything related to keeping our earth healthy and flourishing, there are many organizations offering green scholarships to help fund your education. Check out the following environmental scholarships to see if they might be right for you:

Comeback Clothes

78% of all fabric ends up in landfills every year, even though most of it is reusable. To counteract this, H&M and DoSomething.org have come together to sponsor Comeback Clothes, a program that aims to reduce textile waste and help save the planet. Students can drop off their own clothes at the labeled bins in H&M stores, or organize a drive at their school and drop off all the donated materials. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, you must take a photo of you dropping of your clothes and send it to DoSomething.org. You will then be entered into a raffle for a $10,000 scholarship, and receive 15% off your next purchase at H&M.

Plushbeds Green Scholarships

How can you work towards a greener planet and a smaller carbon footprint? What do you think the advantages are of living an eco-friendly lifestyle? PlushBeds, a company that manufactures and sells earth-friendly, sustainably-produced, natural latex mattresses, wants you to answer those questions in their essay contest. If you are an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in a field related to the environmental sciences, email your essay on the aforementioned topic to scholarships@plushbeds.com by August 15, 2014. If you win, you will be notified on September 15, 2014, and receive your $1,000 scholarship upon confirmation of your enrollment at an accredited U.S. university.

GCA Scholarships

The Garden Club of America (GCA) sponsors 27 different environmental scholarships in the following categories: Botany, Coastal Wetlands Studies, Conservation & Ecological Restoration, Desert Studies, Garden History & Design, Horticulture, International Work & Study, Landscape Architecture, Native Bird Habitat, Pollinator Research, Summer Environmental Study, and Urban Forestry. 12 of the scholarships are directly managed by GCA, while 15 require highly specialized knowledge of the topic to judge, and are therefore handled by partners such as Cornell University and the Center for Plant Conservation. These scholarships are extremely prestigious; upon review of the list of recipients of of the GCA awards in Tropical Botany (awarded in the 1980’s), the selection panel member remarked that it was a “veritable who’s who of the Systematics and Forest Ecology fields today.”
