Every year, different colleges, institutions and companies make available various grants, loans and scholarships to students in need of financial assistance. Thus, if you are currently pursuing a career in teaching and would like to benefit from some form of financial backing, then, you’d be happy to know that there exist various national teaching scholarships that you can apply for. Examples of these include:

1. American Montessori Society Scholarships:

If your desire is to become a Montessori teacher, then, this scholarship is specially designed for you. However, to qualify, you ought to have been enrolled, accepted, or in the process of being accepted into an American Montessori Society affiliated teacher education program. You should also present a compelling personal statement, verification of acceptance to a program affiliated with AMS and, 3 letters of recommendation to the society. Although awards vary, each student gets $1,000 per year. Applications close on May 1.

The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Scholarships

Being an international organization, AFCEA is dedicated towards offering annual scholarships to students undertaking degree courses in teaching. Each year, a total of 50 are awarded these scholarships. Each students gets $5,000. To qualify, one has to be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Mathematics) related field and, should have a 3.0 GPA. Applications close on May 1.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH)

TEACH is a government funded initiative that helps pay for the students tuition fees in exchange for their service after graduation. In this case, graduates who benefit from this grant are expected to teach in schools that take in low-income students for the first four years following their graduation. Recipients of TEACH get an annual grant of $4,000 per year. The deadline for applying for this grant is usually in early February.

Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship

Almost all colleges offering teaching programs get funding from the Robert Noyce foundation. The funds provided are then distributed among students pursuing degrees in education and are in need of financial aid. However, to qualify, one must be pursuing a degree in Science or Math discipline with the intention of teaching kindergarten to grade 12 students. The award money and deadlines for this scholarship vary from one institution to another.

Phi Delta Kappa International Education Foundation Scholarship

This scholarship targets both high school seniors and undergraduate students who wish to pursue or are pursuing careers in either elementary or secondary education. Each year, a total of 30 scholarships are awarded to the aspiring educators. However, the student has to have at least a 3.0 GPA. Applications close on April 1.

Aside from these national scholarships, there also exist various teaching scholarships that are usually awarded by individual colleges. Thus, it’s always important to check with your college to see if there may be other scholarship opportunities that you could apply for. As such, you can apply for not just one of the above scholarships but, can try applying for a number of them. Based on all of these options, it’s clear that if your dream is to become a teacher, then, making that dream a reality is very possible.
