Top Organizations that Help Students with Suicidal Behavior

These groups aim to help students facing difficult situations

S uicide or thoughts of suicide should always be considered in all seriousness, especially since recent data suggest that the number of students committing suicide jumped in the last five years. According to statistics, there are approximately 1,000 cases of suicide every year in just ONE campus. Overall rankings reveal that suicide among 15 to 24 year olds is the 3rd leading cause of death.

Fortunately, there are currently organizations aiding students who attempted or are considering thoughts of suicide. If you or anyone you known have suicidal tendencies, following are the top organizations that help students with suicidal behavior:

Services for Teens at Risk (STAR) Center

Focused on adolescents, STAR offers outreach services for students who are struggling with depression, anxiety, and other suicide risks. They offer outpatient therapy and assist family members in understanding and coping with adolescents who are suffering through suicidal thoughts. Heavily invested in the project, STAR also trains their people on the subject to better deal with patients and their families. STAR follows up with maintenance groups and also involves families/friends of people who committed suicide.

Aevidum

The word translates to "I have got your back" and originally created by students who had a friend die from suicide. Aevidum is currently a wide-reaching program that aims to educate students and make them feel accepted, loved, and appreciated to overcome feelings of solitude and depression. Typically seen in PSAs, events, assemblies, and other online content – most of the materials shown through the organization are generated by students themselves. This paves the way for a strong sense of community between peers.

Suicide Awareness Voices of Education (SAVE)

An extensive program that aims to help adolescents suffering from mental disorders, SAVE doesn't just address suicide but also the risk factors leading up to it. The organization makes this possible by: (1) informing people about suicide, (2) reduce stigma attached to suicide, and (3) be a source of support for people who are or know people with suicidal tendencies. SAVE also works as a pathway for schools who wants to increase their vigilance on suicide by providing materials and lesson plans that will help educators' better deal with their students.

Trevor Project

Definitely something worth mentioning, many of the youth today contemplate suicide because they have a hard time fitting in due to sexual orientation issues. The Trevor Project is a suicide organization specially created to help lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and confused youth to accept and understand their own personalities to avoid depression, anxiety and other suicide risk factors.

The Jed Foundation

Dedicated toward college students, the Jed Foundation works through the introduction of programs and models designed to promote better mental health. Through this, the Foundation hopes to improve the coping techniques of students with the overall goal of preventing thoughts of suicide. An accredited charity, the foundation doesn’t just tackle suicidal students directly but also talks with campus leaders and parents for a more thorough approach.

Of course, those are just few of the organizations helping students with suicidal tendencies. Most schools have their own local chapter to provide more direct help. Check out ULifeline for specific school resources.
